Saving downloaded pictures

My internet explorer is suddenly saving all images
as .BMP files rather than as .JPG files which is was
doing up until this past week. These files are enormous
and although I can convert them to .jpg files, I'd rather
resume being able to save them as such. The "save as"
window only gives .bmp as an option. How do I remedy
this?
