My internet explorer is suddenly saving all images
as .BMP files rather than as .JPG files which is was
doing up until this past week. These files are enormous
and although I can convert them to .jpg files, I'd rather
resume being able to save them as such. The "save as"
window only gives .bmp as an option. How do I remedy
this?

Hi Rob,

This problem occurs if the Temporary Internet Files are full. Clear the
temporary internet files.

1. Start Internet Explorer
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the General tab.
4. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files.
5. When you are prompted to delete all temporary Internet files, click OK.

Hi Paul,

Try this:
1.. Quit Internet Explorer, if it is running.
2.. Click Start, and then click Run.
3.. In the Open box, type Regedit, and then press ENTER.
4.. Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif

5.. Double-click the Content Type value in the right pane of the Registry Editor.
6.. In the Edit String dialog box, type image/gif in the Value Data box, and then click OK.
7.. Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg

8.. Double-click the Content Type value in the right pane of the Registry Editor.
9.. In the Edit String dialog box, type image/jpg in the Value Data box, and then click OK.
10.. Quit the Registry Editor.
11.. Start Internet Explorer and open any Web page with a JPG or a GIF image.

I am having the same problem (IE6 under WinXP saves jpg
files as jpe files). Article Q260650 lists 3 workarounds.
Workarounds 1 (listed below by Rob) & 2 did not fix the
problem. Workaround 3 also doesn't fix the problem.
Instead, it tells you how to get around it, which is very
time consuming if you have a lot of jpg files to save.
Article Q250747 lists a fourth cause. However, none of
the files I'm saving have multiple periods.

This is very frustrating. I would really appreciate it if
anybody could help me.

Thanks,
Paul
