saving custom design templates

I am attempting to save a custom PPT as a template in Office PP 2000. The
saved template opens up but when I attempt to add a slide (page) it doesn't
forward the custom template.

What am I missing?

You did not save a slide as a template did you? You must make your changes
to the master (View - master - slide master) and save as a template. That
should do the trick.
