Custom Template Not Taking Effect

Working with Office 2002.

I've created a custom template with colour schemes and custom animation.
When I try to apply that template to a presentation, it won't take effect.
When I view the available templates in Slide Design my custom version
indicates 'Template.pot Preview not available'. I've tried applying the
template to individual slides and to the slide master.

Insights appreciated.
