Saving a word document to a different format

How do I save a Word document to a format that can be read by individuals who
do not own Office? I attached an invite I created to an email, and some of
my readers couldn't open it.
 
Another possibility is to save the doc in RTF format, which is readable by
more programs (e.g. NotePad)
