Saved remote desktop connection opens with wrong application

I'm able to connect to our terminal server using remote deksktop connection
on a Windows XP Pro machine, but when I tried to save the connection, it set
it up to open with Acrobat Reader. I changed the file association so that
..rdp files open with c:\windows\system32\mstsc.exe, but I got the same result
when I tried to save a connection. Also tried associating .rdp files with
c:\documents and settings\all users\start
menu\programs\accessories\communications\remote desktop, but it didn't help.
Tried uninstalling Acrobat Reader, but now my saved connection has a notepad
icon and I get the error that it's not a valid Wind32 application when I try
to open it. Tried copying the mstsc.exe file from a machine that was working
to this computer, but the results are the same. Tried
downloading/reinstalling the remote desktop client, but it won't allow me to
do so on an XP machine. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

In Windows Explorer or My Computer..

Tools --> Folder Options...
File Types tab...
Scroll down the list of "Registered File Types" to "RDP"...
Click on it once to highlight it...
First - below in the "Details for 'RDP' extension", it should say:

Opens with: Remote Desktop Connection
(The 'n' may be cut off by the "Change" button.)

If it does not say this, click on the "Change" button... (If it does, skip
this next part...)
Click on Browse...
Go to C:\Windows\System32... (Your system 32 path *may be different -
that is the common example.)
Select the "mstsc.exe" file...
Check the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"
checkbox...
Click OK.

Next, click the 'Advanced' button...
There should be two entries under "Actions:"..
- Connect
- Edit

Connect should be bolded. (That means it is "Set as default" - if it is
not - click on it once to highlight and click on the "Set as Default" button
on the right side of that window.)

Click on "Connect" once to highlight it and select "Edit" from the right
side.
Action: Connect
Application used to perform action:
DRIVELLETTER:\PathtoSystem32Dir\mstsc.exe "%l"
(Note - that is a lowercase "L"..)
Use DDE should be checked.
Application: mstsc
Topic: System
OK.

Click on "Edit" once to highlight it and select "Edit" from the right
side.
Action: Edit
Application used to perform action:
DRIVELLETTER:\PathtoSystem32Dir\mstsc.exe -edit "%l"
(Note - that is a lowercase "L"..)
Use DDE should be checked.
Application: mstsc
Topic: System
OK.

Click on OK in the "Edit File Type" window..
Click on OK in the "Folder Options" window..
Reboot for good measure..
Try your RDP file again.
