Save Picture defaults to Untitled Bitmap

Patrick

I'm running IE 6.0 under WinXp SP2. All picture
downloads default to untitled bitmap (.bmp) files. I've
reviewed and applied Knowledge Base articles 810978,
260650 and 250747 but none of them corrected the
problem. Any new ideas?

That happens when the Temporary Internet Files are too full. In IE click
Tools | Internet Options. Click Delete Files in the Temporary Internet
files section of the General tab. On the next window place a check mark in
the box to Delete all offline content.

I thank you for your quick reply! However, I have
already tried that particular solution (several times)
and it does not correct the problem. Any other ideas?

Check for damaged files in ..\downloaded program files (also accessed via IE
tools, internet options, settings button (TIF), view objects button. If
found, right click and select update or delete depending on what they are,
and whether they are needed. - courtesy Sandi Hardmeier, MS MVP

Totally clear your TIF folder (delete and restart - will be recreated in
it's default, empty state):
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
Check the size setting of your TIF - Tools...Internet Options...General tab,
Settings. Make sure it's not set to zero.

If still no joy...are you having problems with all images or just .jpg
types?

Thanks! Jon,

I've tried all the suggestions that you provided but...
still no joy. The problem occurs regardless of what type
of graphic file I try to download, .jpg, .bmp, .gif, etc.
Maybe a problem with the Registry? I hesitate to get
involved with that if I don't have to but what's left?

Hi! Jon,

Thanks, I finally got it repaired!

I started with a scan of protected files and then an in-
place upgrade of WinXP but neither one did the trick.
Finally, I edited the registry and reinstalled Internet
Explorer and that was successful. Thanks again for your
help!

The usual fix is to clear your cache.
IE-Tools-Internet Options-Delete Files (in the TIF section)

That seems to work about 98% of the time but if it doesn't, close IE
and reopen and do it again. Also it has been reported that clear
cookies helps, but ensure you save any that you need.
