Save dialogue box disappears once file is saved

xpsp1 using ie,which shows as sp2??

until very recently, whenever I downloaded a file, when the download
was complete, the dialogue box would remain on my screen asking what I
wanted next

now, suddenly, on completion of the save, the dialogue box just
disappears

any idea how I get back to normal?

when downloading a file theres a little tick box that says something like
"Close this dialog box when finished" untick that and it should work

but there's no 'tick box' on my file download dialogue box, I've just
double checked
