I have an issue with these "windows" in the sense that where you normally
have the left column that shows with the related icons:

Desktop

My Documents

My Computer

My Network

Neither the icons nor the text is there anymore...how do I repair this?

Thanks...

What programs are you referring to, perhaps you need to give that info If MS
Office then you may need to carry out a repair, but ask the question in a
office newsgroup.

This occurs no matter what the program or the instance...if I am attempting
to download say, an install file from a website...when I got to save as, the
icons/text are not there in the left hand column...

If I attempt to open, say, and avi file from within a program, the
icons/text are not there...I have to use the drop down box thats usually
across the top...I think its a general winxp issue as it doesn't seem to be
program specific...

Start \ Run \ regedit
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32
Right side, NoPlacesBar

I'm confused...I understaqnd up until "Right side, NoPlacesBar"...

under this key I show "PlacesBar" with a value of "value not set"

Do I need to create a key that says "NoPlacesBar" under "comdlg32?

many thanks...

If NoPlacesBar is present in right side then delete it. If not then open :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\comdlg32

Delete "NoPlacesBar" (if it exists) from right side.

Ayush...

I thank you for your assistance, but the only entry under that key in the
registry is:

"PlacesBar" with a value of "value not set"

Do I perhaps need to delete this, restart and re-enter the "PlacesBar" under
this key?

Thanks...
