Sata & Sata II XCompatibility Question.

I have an Asus A7N8X - E Deluxe Mobo, which has SATA onboard.

I am thinking of upgrading the whole lot soonish in the future. In the
meantime (And so as not to waste money) I wondered if I purchased a
Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATA II 7200RPM 16MB Cache would it be
downwardly compatible with SATA?

I could then just put this drive in my new system when I upgrade.

I would look in my manual, but as SATA II was not out at the time, there
would be no mention of it.

The Sata II drives I have purchased in the past have a jumper to make
the drive act like a SATA I drive for older motherboards that do not
support the SATA II technology.

Anyways, I would check the manufacturer's website to be certain of this
backwards compatability.

Should be no problem. While we haven't used that specific HDD with that ASUS
board, we've used many other makes & models of SATA-II HDDs (including WD
disks) in the A7N8X-E with no problems whatsoever. And we've never
encountered a single instance (to the best of my knowledge) where it was
even necessary to jumper the disk for the 1.5 Gb/sec data interface.

BTW, that's a fine HDD and we highly recommend it. We've used it in a number
of different machines. I noticed Staples recently had it on sale for $119.98
(with no rebate!) - a really nice price for the retail, boxed version of the
drive. But I don't know if Staples still has it on sale. It's actually the
same model as the one you mentioned, except yours is the OEM (bare) version
and should be fine.

I have an Asus A7N8X - E Deluxe Mobo, which has SATA onboard.

I got an old ass Asus a8s-x and it only supports SATA ONE, but if you
set it to SATA TWO the motherboard will simply IGNORE the TWO part and
revert to SATA ONE. This is what I did and it has NEVER caused a
problem of any kind.

ALSO, ASUS has some downloads in case your motherboard can be flashed
to support SATA TWO if you want that to work.

I'm sure their is an increase in speed from I to II but the ONE for me
is plenty fast.
