SATA II Drive will not work, what did I do wrong?

Here is the system [note the BIOS info if that is a problem]
Windows XP Home Edition [SP2] 5.1.2600
Motherboard= Asus A8S-X
BIOS DATE: 08/26/05 VER: 08.00.10

Chipset SiS 756, AMD Hammer
SIS 756 ONLY SUPPORTS
SATA & RAID functions
Provides 4 independent SATA ports, compliant with Serial ATA 1.0
Specification ,and supports RAID 0, 1, 0+1, and JBOD configuration.

CPU AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice S939 Step DH-E6
Video Card NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS(256 MB) NV41GS
RAM 1024 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM) Corsair VS1GB400C3
DRIVE Maxtor 6L080P0
DVD DRIVE NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A

I replaced the following hard drive:
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6L080P0 80GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA133 Hard Drive
- OEM

With this newer SATA II drive

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16822148140
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS (Perpendicular Recording
Technology) 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

The Motherboard CLAIMS to support this drive and indeed does have SATA
inputs [2 in fact], but it has been nothing but trouble.

1. The bios recognizes this newer drive as the 4th master drive? and
Places my DVD drive as 2nd Master [1st ide location is empty]
2. Sometimes, well 50% of the time, the computer will Freeze at POST
time. I have to hit the reset switch over and over.
3. In WinXp /SP2, it will freeze and it has no pattern to why/wheen it
freezes. I have to reboot and again have to hope the BIOS recognizes
this drive.
4. When I JUMPER the drive to SATA ONE it doesn't want to get past the
BIOS/POST and will not allow me to go into the bios menu.
5. When I JUMPER the drive to SATA TWO [which the board is not suppose
to support] it "sometimes" will go through the post and also boot
properly to WINxp.

I called SEAGATE's 800 number and they told me to put the jumper back
on to make the drive SATA ONE again.

What in the world is going on?

What did I do wrong?
Is their anything I can do to fix this?
Am I cursed?
PLEASE Help me, please?

Have you loaded the most current SATA drivers for this? Does the mobo
support SATA II (your post indicates that it's SATA I compliant)?

Put the jumper on the SATA II drive that locks it in 1.0 mode.

Bob:
Just to make sure we understand the problem...

1. When your old PATA HDD is connected to the system as the boot drive, the
system boots without incident and is completely functional. Is that right?
So that the problem you're experiencing and which you describe *only* occurs
when your SATA HDD is installed as the boot drive. Is that correct?

2. Again, this is important...
Your problem occurs ONLY when the SATA HDD is installed? There's never a
problem with the PATA HDD.

3. But is your SATA HDD a boot drive - at least potentially? Were you able
to install the OS onto it without a problem? It's only after you've
installed the OS onto it and attempt to boot to that drive that you're
experiencing this problem?

4. When you refer to the system "freezing" you mean the system never
completes the boot process, right? You can never get to a Desktop when that
happens, yes?

5. Are you indicating that after a boot "freeze" there are times when you
can reboot and the boot will be successful? But this happens only sometimes?

6. Your SATA HDD is connected to the motherboard's SATA 1 connector? You've
correctly attached the its data & power cables? Do you have another data
cable to try?

7. I don't think you need auxiliary SATA controller drivers with this
motherboard. But have you re:checked your BIOS settings to ensure they're
correct insofar as any SATA HDD configuration is involved? Presumably the
default settings should suffice.

8. In most cases a SATA-II HDD will function without problems even when
installed in a system where the motherboard does not support SATA-II
capability. But every so often it *is* necessary to jumper that drive to a
SATA-I interface.

9. Just on the off-chance that there's a problem with that new SATA HDD, it
might be wise to download Seagate's HDD diagnostic utility and check it out.
I don't think that's the problem but keep it in mind.

I did that. Seems to be working BUT I did that before and had MANY
freezes in xp/sp2. I don't know what's going on but I won't be buying
this sata 2 business again.
thanks for the help sr.

Yes, which makes no sense because the post/bios problem has nothing to
do with whatever happens afterward [loading an OS]
4. When you refer to the system "freezing" you mean the system never
completes the boot process, right? You can never get to a Desktop when that
happens, yes?

It was [might again] freezing at the point where the bios detects the
sata drive, it wouldn't allow me to go into the bios setup until I
rebooted it a dozen times.

By switching from sata 2 to sata 1 with the jumpers I could then go
into win xp/sp2, but it froze many many times. I hasn't froze in about
24 hours now but I do not trust it. Can you blame me?

thanks for your help, let me know if you can think of anything else to
try?
