Safely Remove Hardware

After using this feature, several non-existant drives still appear as
"active", but can not be removed. How do I "clear" the drives displayed?
Attempts to stop and remove them result in a message to reinsert the
removable media.
Example 1: I insert my memory stick and it shows drive F: & G: as active.
I can only remove F:, but when I do both F: and G: are removed
Example 2: In addition to the above, drives I: J: K: L: & M: are displayed,
but cannot be stopped.
Is there a cache that can be cleared; a registry entry that can be changed?

Forgive me asking what may seem to be an obvious question but are you certain
that these drives are non-existent? Do you need to remove them?

On my computer, there are several drive letters that refer to the various
built-in card readers which appear to be separate intyernal USB drives which
you would not normally remove. Also, are F and G perhaps partitions on the
same memory stick so that when you remove the stick both are removed?

Just a thought or two.

John
