Safely Remove Hardware icon

I just bought a HP all in one printer. I installed everything correctly.
The problem that I have now is that the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon stays
on all the time. Is there a way to get rid of this. I have tried to right
click the task bar and tried to choose the Customize Notifications but that
item is not letting me choose it. Is there anything that I can do to stop
this icon from popping up?

You can't remove it. All you can do is always hide it.

Right click the Taskbar | Properties | Taskbar tab | Customize button |
Find the Safely Remove Hardware icon | Click on the Behavior item to show
the V | Click the V to display: Hide when inactive, Always hide and Always
show | Select Always hide | Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK

Also...
Right click the Taskbar | Properties | Taskbar tab |
Select: Hide inactive icons

Notification area Hide inactive icons is grayed out.

If you have Norton/Symantec crap, read this.

I had just found out the culprit for this problem: it was "me". Some weeks
back I was fiddling with Norton's Utilities System Optimizer and had
check-marked Start menu /Turn off System Tray CleanUp. I am explaining this
for the benefit of other NAV users.
