safely remove hardware icon??

Is there a "switch" somewhere I need to turn on to get the safely remove hardware icon to show up on
the task bar? I have an IBM thinkpad R40 laptop and when I put a flash disk in, the removal icon
does not appear like it always does in my other computers.

Is it likely it is hidden from view? Did you click on the arrow that
appears in the taskbar?

I've been scolded before for cross posting but never for dual posting <G>

Thanks for the reply

Not hidden, I have the "hide inactive icons" checkbox un-checked. when I put in a flash drive, the
icon just doesn't show up.

BTW, sorry I didn't say, I'm using windows XP professional

yes I get the chime when inserting or removing the USB flash drive
Acknowledging that device was inserted. just don't get icon.

that is correct, the "safely remove hardware" icon does not (ever) show up on the task bar
Does device show up in Device manger?

yes, and it goes away when I pull the drive
Does device show up in My computer?

yes it does
You can use/read usb device?

yes, add files, read files, format, etc etc.
just no remove icon!

yes. since I have been tracking this over the last few days, I've noticed a big change in the
icons running in the system tray. on one boot, there'll be 9, which is normal, then on anoter boot
there will be 3 or 4. I've gone into the task bar properties and "customized" the behavior of the
"current items" in the system tray (setting the behavior of the "safely remove hardware" icon to
"always show") but it still never shows up.

It's been over a year since I have cleaned house on this box, I'm starting to think that I'll just
do a HD wipe and start fresh...

Reinstalling Windows seems a little excessive.
You could just go to My Computer, select drive, rt click and select "eject".
Workaround. yes.

Go to Taskbar properties and uncheck "hide Inactive icons".
Try to boot a few times like that. See if you get any consistency on what
shows in Systray.

Other than that I don't know.

Better late than never!

73_Ghia- I am having exactly the same issues....did you ever find the
solution?

Dear all,
I had the same problems sometimes ago; the 'remove hardware icon' and the
'network icon' could not appear in the taskbar. Try this, because it works
for me. You must include the Volume icon in the taskbar tray. Go to
'Start/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices', choose 'Volume' tab, check
the 'Place volume icon in the taskbar' then OK. I hope it works for you too.

Thank you very much parlins,

I had the very same problem and following your suggestion now I have
the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon again.

Unfortunately, it looks like I need to do all the steps every time I
restart the PC.

Does it happen to you too? Any workaround?

Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem even with the sound volume icon on the taskbar.
Occasionaly a windows setting error pops-up (I haven't been carefull enough
to write down the error message) and the icon shows up. But after rebooting
the system persist?

Any additional suggestion
