safe mode

I cannot seem to start my computer in safe mode.....I hit f8....but dont get
advanced options,I get....boot record....I had a problem with error reporting
and was told to correct "add ons",but cant get into safe mode..
I am using windows xp home edition...and Internet explorer 6..
hope you can help..
