I have a Toshiba lap top running XP. The monitor no
longer works and I linked it to an expernal monitor which
is fine except I have to press Fn & F5 each time it
starts to get the display on the external monitor. I
decided to see if I could make this automatic by changing
a setting in the Display option in Control Panel. I
changed it from Display 1 to 2 and yes it automatically
goes on the external monitor, but all I get is the
Desktop Background and no icons or anything else at all.
I have tried to boot in Safe mode using the F8 key but no
joy at all. Could anybody offer me ANY advice. I would be
grateful not to have to restore it with my restore disks
just yet.

The screen that comes up does not have any thing on it
but the desktop pictue. I cannot gain access to the PC as
I cannot see past this picture. That is why I want to try
Safe Mode.

Are you sure that you didn't just EXTEND the destop to monitor #1 when
you did that? You will need "Clone", not "Extend".
