safe mode

I noticed my Mcafee icon was black indicating I am not protected. I rebooted
and it has been flawless since. B/c there is always a risk of intrusion, I
attempted to use safe mode. Going thru the process I always use and the same
page I regularly sign into, there was a choice of administrator(that's me) or
two capital letters, the name we gave the pc.
In the past I just enter in the administrator's box our password and we go
into safe mode.
Now it will not accept any letters in either box
Any ideas + thank you.

Then scan from other vendors to make sure the system is clean.
Then uninstall McAfee and reinstall it and get the updates regularly.
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet

Thank you for all the extensive information. Prior to reading your
information, I removed the password option. I then booted up in regular made
with no problem. I rebooted and now I could enter safe mode from which I ran
virus scan and thre malware scans. I rebooted into regular made and attended
to interner options by clearing history, deleting files and deleting cookies.
Ran scans again and allis well. Reinstalled password and all is fine.
Made note of your suggestions and will implement if problems arise.

Glad to Help Peter, now you need to run disk cleanup and defrag in safe mode
then open a run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] you will need the XP CD installation media for
this operation to accomplish.
Or if you don't have the XP CD try to run the chkdsk on start up by right
click the C:\ Primary partition and select properties then click Tools, there
you will find Defrag, Chkdsk and Disk cleanup.
