Safe mode won't work

I have a XP machine that picked up a Trojan from some of my kids
browsing somehow. I could not delete the files from system32 so went
to boot in safe mode to try to manually remove them. I could not get the
machine to boot in safe mode. It would boot ok in normal mode.

I used Partizon root kit killer and got the Trojan out. But, what could
cause the machine not to be able to boot into safe mode and boot OK
normally? The machine does have two accounts and a guest account. The
main account has administrator privilege.

Bob,

What caused the problem with not entering safe mode may be hard to tell,
however to enter - and restore the safe mode option might work by:

- Go Start\Run then type msconfig and click OK.
- Select the Boot.ini tab on the System Configuration menu
- Check the box to the left of /SAFEBOOT
- Click OK and reboot the system.

The system should now automatically boot into Safe Mode.

BEFORE exiting the safe mode, uncheck the /SAFEBOOT box.

Good luck,

If you got the trojan out , try doing a system restore to before it
happened .

sometimes the malware
corrupts the system files
as well.

so if you have successfully
remove the deviant with
an antiviral, it is highly likely
that the corrupted system
files were not replaced with
genuine ones, thus you are likely
experiencing a dysfunctional
operating system.

in which case, i would suggest
to do a repair installation
with your windows cd.

the above method would
replace all corrupted system
files and leave the other
software functional in windows.

if however, a software doesn't
function afterwards, then it
may have been the cause of
corruption initially and now
it has become dysfunctional.

you should take note that using the system
restore feature in scenarios like these
is not recommended because the
restore points may have captured
the malware and you would be re infecting
your system if you utilize a system
restore point.

a feature that a windows repair
installation provides is that it will
remove all prior restore points and
create a new uninfected one.
