thank you, malke, for responding. I use McAfee - which I
find to be ridiculous. I would run the McAfee scan. It
would find nothing - thereby I have no idea what viruses
I have. My computer would still run like crap. So, I
would have to go into "Safe mode with command prompt".
It removes all viruses for me - it will show whether it
was trojans, etc. I learned how to do this on the McAfee
site. So, to my question. Once in SAFE MODE I type in at
the new prompt "scan/adl/clean/all" it then tells
me "datafile CLEAN.DAT not found". The first time this
error message came up I got advice from a technician.
Said to type as "scan /adl /clean / all". And it ran
just fine. Now I can't get it to run again. Spaces or
no spaces it does not work. I'm sorry for sounding
ignorant - this computer stuff confuses me.

I have in the past run in DOS mode to do a virus scan by
typing in "scan/adl/clean/all". I have used this twice
to remove viruses. At one point I again tried to run
this scan but received the following error "CLEAN.DAT
not found." I did contact someone who helped me retype
by putting spaces in between each "/" and it did run fine.
Now once again it will not run - not even with the
spaces. would someone PLEASE point me in the right
direction. I would be eternally grateful!!!!!

There is no dos mode in Windows XP. What antivirus are
you using? Try
and scan in Safe Mode (hit F8 as the computer is
booting). What
viruses? We need more information from you in order to
provide more
help.

Mike is right, but I did notice this thread. Unfortunately, I still
don't really understand you. If the McAfee program isn't working - and
it sounds like it's missing a necessary file - a virus may have
disabled it. There are quite a few viruses that "break" av programs and
firewalls. If your computer is still infected, you will probably not be
able to install a different av program. I think the best thing for you
to do is take your machine to a good local computer shop and have them
clean it up for you.

Good luck,

Malke
