Hello,
I have a Toshiba laptop running on Windows Xp.For some reason it
stopped running yesterday and said it had to turn itself off.
I have tried everything to get it to start in safe mode with no luck.
Then I decided to insert my Windows xp cd for recovery console it goes
through the blue screens saying it is installing things but at the end of
that stage it says no hard drive found then shuts laptop down
Does this mean my hard drive is broken and I need a new one or am I doing
something wrong.
Please help.

It doesn't sound like you actually booted from the CD. Be sure your BIOS
setting is set to boot from the CD! With the CD, you do not need a drive
to boot the machine: the hard drive is not used for the boot.
When you boot from the CD you should get a message "Press any key to boot
from CD ... " for a few seconds. If you don't press a key, you don't boot
from the CD.
I'd suggest trying it again.

If you're talking about INSTALLING from the CD, that's different. The of
course you need the drive. Ir you're installing and it says there is no CD,
then it's much more serious. Instead of the recovery console, you'll likely
have to do a full reinstall starting right from the beginning as though it
were a new hard drive.
