s-l-o-w logon

My Dell D600 (Pentium M 1.7Ghz with 1gb of RAM) is
experiencing slow logon times. I'm using it in a corporate
environment on a Windows 2000 domain. The "Ctrl+Alt+Del"
screen appears very quickly, but upon entering logon
credentials, it just sits there for up to 5 minutes with a
blue background (no, not the screen of death) and the
mouse pointer. There's no hourglass, no activity on the
disk indicator, nothing. I initially thought this was
related to slow network performance or a busy domain
controller, but it exhibits the same problem whether
loggin on locally, at home, or at work. I keep my disk
cleaned up and defragged regularly. Any suggestions?

Ensure that you have good DNS name resolution in your environment.
All Windows XP clients should point to an internal DNS server that is
authoritative for the domain.

If that is OK, then you might want to enable UserEnv logging
and take a network trace to see where the delay is:
