S - l - o - w computer

I have no idea what's wrong with my computer but it's
running very slowly recently. I am using Windows XP on an
Acer Aspire G600p, 2.4 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 processor. The
desktop is taking ages to load and opening programs is
taking much longer than usual. Things I have tried:
closed unnecessary programs at start-up, updated and ran
my anti-virus and adware/spyware programs, ran disk check
and defragged (several times), updated graphics drivers
and reinstalled my broadband modem drivers as advised by
AOL as this program is opening very slowly indeed! I have
run out of ideas and would appreciate your help guys.
