IMAPP.EXE and s-l-o-w system

The last few days my son's computer has been running VERY
slowly. We use Internet connection sharing through his
system which has a broadband connection.

After pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete I can see that one
component, IMAPP.EXE, seems to be using 99% of processor
cycles.

If I try to shut down the system, I get the
message "IMAPP.EXE not responding". After a reboot,
IMAPP.EXE is still chewing every cycle it can. I've
manually killed this process and then everything runs fast
again. I ran SpyBot looking for Spyware and found a few
things (including Gator) which I removed. My antivirus
software, with the latest fixes, runs clean.

However, I still get the same problem after a reboot.
What does IMAPP.exe do? Is this a known problem? What's
the effect of killing this process? BTW, I have all the
latest Windows fixes installed.
