S-l-o-o-w-w-w XP . . .

Lloyd

I went out ot town for four months and returned to family
reporting WinXP Home Ed PC absolutely creeping along.

I ran Windows Update (took overnight) and updated virus
scanner which is now on it's second day of scanning and
has only scaanned 15,382 files so far.

No strange applications running in task manager and
performance specs are as follows:

CPU Usage: 100%
PF Usage: 202MB

Totals: 684 handles 351 threads 32 processes

Physical Memory (K): Total 384496 Available 85912
System Cache 204508

Commit Charge (K): Total 207308 Limit 914292
Peak 212004

Kernel Memory (K): Total 48740 Paged 26232
Nonpaged 22512

No network utilization charges or other users connected.

Can you please help me sort this out?

Thanks J.J. I already run Ad-Aware and do regular
defrags, etc. but have not been home for a while while
family kept up use of PC. I have a firewall/NAT running.
I will try these things on the link and update and run all
utilities. At this speed, it could take months!

Any more help eagerly accepted!!

Again, thanks. I will get back with results in a few days
(you wouldn't believe how slow it runs!!) I might try
PCpitstop.com, too. They have some diagnostics that run
over the Web.

Nick-
Not using Norton, Using McAfee VirusScan Online. 60GB
Seagate ST360020A HD, 1.3GHz AMD Athlon Processor, 376MB
RAM. It's an HP pavilion xt938 PC and the only non-out-of-
the box hardware I'm using is a Logitech wheel mouse. I
am behind a Netgear FVS318 VPN Firewall and a cable modem.
I ran an updated version of Ad-aware overnight and
restarted w/no improvement. I removed all unnecessary
items from the startup list w/msconfig and this did not
help. I am currently downloading Seagate's diagnostics
program to run. McAfee just found a McAfee SecurityCenter
Update Engine it doesn't recognize... Still working on
this one.

Lloyd;
Make sure Ad-Aware is updated, most recent update was last week.

Go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and get their hard
drive diagnostics, not likely the cause, but worth a look if the rest
does no good.

Reboot to Safe Mode
Does it still run slow?
Disconnect the network/modem cable, does it still run slow?
Disable all applications, is it still slow?
Power off, remove unnecessary cards (network, sound, etc)

Check for and correct damaged/missing system files:
Start/Run
Type "sfc /scannow" ENTER
Have Windows XP CD available.

Otherwise a reinstall may be necessary.
If possible use a spare hard drive to see how it works with just
Windows.

Just to let you know you're not alone. My computer does
the same thing either overnight or over 2 nights. No
applications running. Monitor shows "system" task is
using 100% of CPU. Other apps can run but will continue
to run slowly. Have checked all same as you and can't
find the issue. Shutdown also hangs up. Looks to me
like something has caused XP to loop. Keep trying as
you'll be helping lots of us. Barry
