runtime error abnormal termination in WORD w/WindowsXP

For the past few months I keep getting shut down while I'm
in the middle of creating/working on Word documents.
I have Windows XP.
I have faithfully downloaded all WindowsXP file updates
since purchasing my desktop home computer from Dell in
January 2002.
It also happens when I've:
- saved a Word document
- minimized the Word screen
- gone online to check my email, and then signed offline
and
- returned to Word to work on the saved document
I have AOL, don't have a DSL line.
I hope someone can help me. - Liz

You will get better help in one of the MS Office newsgroups instead of
this one, which is about the operating system.
