running win98 software on winxp?

*Most* programs designed for Windows 98 run just fine in XP
without doing anything special. Your first step should be just to
try them, and look for solutions only if they don't work.

Right click on the program file (.exe), click on properties, click on the
compatibility tab, in the compatibllity mode change it to Windows 98. See if
that helps.

Yes, it is called "Compatibility Mode". Look in your Help & Support for
instructions. If the program will not run in regular mode or
compatibility mode, it will not run in XP. However, most Win98 programs
do run fine in XP.

Yes, it's called compatibility mode. However, unless it's a game,
there's a good chance the Win98 program will run OK in XP.
XP like all other NT operating systems does not allow direct calls to
hardware. IOW, if your 98 program makes a direct call to video and or
sound, it may not work even when using compatibility mode. That's
usually what causes some games not to work.

I have several very old Win 3.0 and 3.1 programs that run just fine in
XP but the only real way to find out if a program works OK is to test
it.

what programs run only on 98SE and not on operating since SE? I have
both systems running and find that XP Pro will run every thing I have on
the SE system. The reverse is not true.
