is that possible to run winXP with win98???

i have 2 computers which run win98 and XP. i would like to reduce to one
computer by putting the Win98 harddrive into the winXP PC. I would like to
setup a page to choose loading Win98 or XP. Some people teach me i can edit
that in boot loader. the command below is what people teach me:
Control Panel>System>Advance>startup and recovery>edit
chick edit and put (X:\"Windows 98" ) to the end of that folder which X
stand for the drive with win98.
This setting give me the choice for win98 but it can't load and auto restart
the pc then back to that choose page.
My WinXP drive had set as primary master and win98 as primary slave. both
windows were set on the first partition and run at FAT32 format.
In this case, what i can do to setup a page to choose to load Win98 or XP?
it the notes above is not correct, what i ned to do? Please someone help me
about it.

well, before you can do that you may want to learn about adding partitions.
a dual-boot system with XP and 98 is possible but Win98 must be installed
first for some reason

Since both OSs used C: as their system drive letter,
you must continue using C: for each of them. This is not
possible with the native WinXP boot loader - you have
to install a third-party boot loader. I have used XOSL
for this very configuration on several occasions. It's free!

There is no need to re-install either OS.

Post again if you wish to go down this path and need
further instructions.

thank you for your reply. so in this case i have nothing to do unless i
format both drive and reinstall win98 then xp???
how about some software that already install in win98 but i don't have the
setup file, how can i back up those software???
and what you say about adding partitons, what is that mean????

The OP does not need to add any partitions - he already
has two drives, each with an OS in its own partition. While
it is a little easier in a multi-booting system to load Win98
first followed by WinXP, there is no compelling reason to
do so. Loading Win98 last disturbs the WinXP boot
environment but this is easily fixed.

You will need a third party boot manager. Do a Google search on boot
managers and research carefully before attempting the move of the hard
drives. I would not attempt this without having a verified image of each
drive copied to external media. It is usually a successful operation, but
anytime you attempt such an intensive procedure, there is always the chance
of failure. A simple glitch in power would probably corrupt data on the
drives. I learned this the hard way and will not repeat this mistake again.

To find a download site (any download site!), just use
Google and type these words into the Search box:

XOSL download

To install XOSL, do this:
- Get a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com.
- Extract xosl.zip onto this disk, then boot the machine with it.
- Run install.bat from the xosl folder.
- When prompted for a target, select your Win98 disk drive.
Do NOT select "Dedicated partition" - it would wipe one
of your installations!
- Reboot the machine when prompted.
- Add WinXP and Win98 to the XOSL menu.
- Hide the two partitions from each other. If you don't
then Win98 won't run off drive C:!.
- You may have to instruct XOSL to swap disks for the
Win98 boot.
That's all!

To restore the WinXP boot, simply boot into the WinXP
Recovery Console, then type this command:

fixmbr

In other words, XOSL in non-intrusive: It makes only a minor
change to the WinXP boot environment which is easily
reversible.

If your C: drive is formatted using the FAT32 file system, MS-MVP
Doug Knox has kindly provided clear instructions:

Install Windows 98 after XP is Installed.
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_9x.htm

Otherwise:

The simplest way I've found to dual boot between Win9x/Me and WinXP
would be to partition your drive(s) roughly as follows:

C: Primary FAT32 Win9x/Me/Legacy Apps
D: Extended NTFS WinXP/Modern Apps

Adjust the partition sizes according to your actual hard drive(s)
size and the amount of space you'd like to allocate to each OS and its
applications.

Create the partitions using Win9x's FDISK so you can enable large
disk support (FAT32). (No need for 3rd party partitioning
utilities/boot managers and their frequent complications.)

Install Win9x/Me first, being sure to select "C:\Windows" (or
D:\Windows, if you prefer) when asked for the default Windows
directory. When you subsequently install WinXP, be sure to specify
"D:\Winnt" (or "D:\Windows," "C:\Winnt" as referred/applicable) when
asked for the default Windows directory, to place it in the other
partition. The WinXP installation routine will automatically set up a
Multi-boot menu for you. The default settings for this menu can be
readily edited from within WinXP. NOTE: If you elect to place
Win9x/Me on the "D:" drive, you'll _have_ to leave the "C:" drive as
FAT32.

This method can be adapted to using 2 physical hard drives by
placing the boot partition (C:, which still must be FAT32) and either
of the operating systems on the Primary Master hard drive, and the
second operating system on the second hard drive.

It is also possible to have a 3rd partition for shared
applications, but it would be necessary for such a partition to be
formatted in the common file format (FAT32). The applications would
also have to be installed into each OS (to ensure proper system file
placement and registry updates), one at a time, but the bulk of the
program files could be located on this common partition. I do not,
however, actually recommend doing this as, if you were to uninstall
such an application from one OS, you may not be able to gracefully
uninstall it from the second OS, having already deleted crucial
installation data during the first uninstall action.
