Running sfc /scannow - Advice Please

D

Dermot

I wanted to run a scan and repair of my system files.

When I run sfc /scannow with my XP Pro Version 2002....
....which includes service pack 2.....

I get a messge requesting Service Pack 2 disc.....the message dialog
explains that certain DLL files are required for XP to operate properly.

Question 1
If the disc includes service pack 2 ....why would it request SP 2?

Question 2
Any other suggestion would be appreciated regarding whatever I may be
overlooking.

Thanks in advance.

If you have SP2 installed and your scan request the CD for SP3 that is
because it wants to compare and replace the files from the disk that cannot
be corrupted so that it knows that the files are good.

If your setup disk includes SP2 then scannow cannot reconize it for it is
probably not programmed to... You will probably have to find out exactly
what it is looking for on the disk to find out how it is reconizing a SP2 CD
and create one.

And what happens when you insert your XP Pro Version 2002 SP2 disk?
What error message?

Are you sure your XP Pro Version includes SP2? SP2 was issued in August
2004.

A common problem with running System Files Checker is that it requires a
CD with all the system drivers for what is currently installed. This
means that if the system has been updated from SP1 to SP2 or from SP2 to
SP3 the user no longer has a current CD. The solution is to carry out a
process known as slipstreaming to put the original and the update
together on a single CD, which can then be used. I personally have never
attempted this but that would be the way forward.

One problem with SFC, Windows File Protection is a Registry key value
for setup called CDInstall. If the original setup was done via a CD then
it's
value = 1. This informs XP that the i386 was on the CD and the \DllCache
was populated from it. As you install Service Packs the Source Path Registry
keys add another source point to search,"ServicePackSourcePath". As the
SFC process runs it searches for the source points and eventually ends up
prompting for the CD-ROM.

Usually that means it doesn't realize the SP2 is on the CD. Use the
browse or whatever the function is named and point to the CD, and then
point to the SP2 folder. That should satisfy it.

I've been thru that on a couple of machines; pointing to it always
worked.
Question 2

Hard to tell.
SP3 is very worthwhile in your case, IF you know your machine can
tolerate it; e.g. it's been installed before and worked OK.
IF it's never had SP3 installed, take it up to SP2 and do a Full
Backup to your external drive, DVD, wherever you keep them. That way, if
SP3 acts up, you can always go back to SP2 status with a simple Restore
and come back to it later. It's well worthwhile reading the MS pages
about installing SP3; lots of good info there about what to do first.
By going to SP3 you will save having the machine having to do what is
now over a hundred updates, which takes quite awhile. It makes
rebuilding a lot faster. Also, SP2's firewall gives you a firewall to
use for connecting to the 'net so it's another level of protection on
top of your antivirus program.

Let us know how it goes, OK?
