running programs

I know that if you press control+alt+delete, you get the task manager, which
shows the current programs that are running. I know there is another tab,
which shows other things, which don't really mean much, as they are just a
list of odd names and extension. However, what my problem is, I have
formatted my computer as this was happening previously, however when I work
on my computer, a box comes up on the taskbar (something similar to what you
get when a program is not responding, with that icon), however it comes and
goes too quickly for me to check to see what is actually running. I do not
have spyware, as I have run microsoft spyware and lavasoft adware and I have
an up to date anti-virus. I formatted my computer, as I was worried it might
have been a type of spyware.

My question is, how can I determine what is causing this, I can only assume
something is "updating" in the background, but it is only there for less then
a second, so by the time I have reached for my mouse, it has disappeared. I
am sure it would probably appear in task manager...but it disappears too
quickly to even open up task manager. Is there anything in windows that
monitors what is running, to try and figure out what program might actually
be causing it?

Look forward to sorting out this frustration.

Thanks
Shaz
