running programs problem

Wondering if there is a conflict between SBC Yahoo Browsers and Windows XP.
Every time I start up, different programs that should auto start, don't.
Sometimes they all do, sometimes they don't. Sometimes I have to double
click my Mcafee icon to get it on the bar. The little shell/bar hiding tool
only appears every 5-10 times I start up. Can't figure out why I have this
problem now. Recently uncovered some worms and deleted them. Could they
have caused this issue? All the functions work, but don't always indicate
they do. Sounds like holes caused by worms maybe? Now also, possibly
related, have to click on my email messages several times to get them to
display without saying "Temporary mail access problem". If I click 2x, will
display, but otherwise get this error message. SBC support doesn't pick up
this problem I have, so looking to see which of these maybe somebody can shed
some light on.

It's always possible the worms are still on your system or you missed other malicious software also present. These things have gotten extremely difficult to remove.

You're not describing the first problem very clearly...let's see if I can help. At the right hand side of the taskbar, where you see the clock, is an area called the system notification area a.k.a. 'the tray'. There are icons in 'the tray' each representing a program that you have running in the background, otherwise invisibly. Are you saying that some of those icons are missing? If so, you should know that this is a commonly reported problem in Windows XP. It's just one of those things that happens to certain configurations.

Having to click several times to get your email messages could have several causes. It could be that other software you have on your computer, for example, your antivirus program, is getting in the way of your email. (Always turn of AV mail filtering - it's not needed.) Or it could be a problem with SBC or Yahoo.

I have found out that on boot up if you login early some programs start
before the system tray notification area is active.
I had this problem alot when I used autologon. I have found if you wait to
logon until floppy activity goes off the second time it will show all the
active programs all the time. If you don't have a floppy then wait until the
disk activity drops. you may also have inactive icons hidden. If the left
side of the system tray has an arrow then there are hidden inactive programs.
