Sometimes updating Windows Media Player can affect the MCI Media Player. Not
always, but it was worth trying

Yes I meant, when talking abouty the settings are the same on both
computers, the MCI Registry Settings as described in the multimedia tutorial
on Sonia's site.
Updating Windows Media Player didn't help, but the movies always
played on
here anyway. Just not Media Player, mplay32.exe.
Have checked infor about video card etc - no good either.
On my old Compaq laptop, in mplay32.exe - there are 6 device types,
two
being direct show. On the new HP there is only 5, 1 only being direct show -
but it lists the file type I am using.
I tried the link to the nimo codec pack, but both mirrors error "site
not
found".
Any other suggestions?

Ok, well, here's the text of your other post (in the interests of
keeping this all in the same place).
PPT 2003 errors and shutsdown when trying to play mpg movies. Have
folllowed advice on Sonia Colemans website but nothing works.
Media player (mci) also errors, on this brand new laptop running
XP
home. Tried decreasing graphics accelleration, tried safe mode. Checked it
supports this device type extension. Every setting and codec is exactly the
same as my old laptop, which will play it fine. All this PC has installed is
Office 2003 pro and some personal files, as well as standard HP software
inclusions.
Can play the file type with Windows media player, but not media player.
When you say the settings are the same on both computers, are you
talking about the MCI Registry Settings as described in the multimedia
tutorial on Sonia's site?
You might also try downloading the NIMO codec pack mentioned
there -- it
has a number of standard codecs included. It's entirely possible there's a
codec included on your old system that's not on this new one, and that could
be causing the problem. Do you know what codec was used to create these
MPGs?
You might also check
http://tinyurl.com/5ohqo -- especially the part
about the video drivers and options for your video card.
Updating Direct X and Windows Media Player is worth a try as well.

doesn,t play in mplay32.exe either on this pc, but will on my
other. I
acccidently posted a new thread for this as well.

:
Might be an MCI setting problem, or it could be a codec problem.
Read
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm
Then try the test described there -- go to start/run and type mplay32.exe
Does your MPG play in that media player?

Using Powerpoint 2003, on new laptop with XP home, can not run ..mpg movies
as inserted movie from file, or as inserted object. Get a
Microsoft
"sorry
for the inconvenience" error message.
Have tried making a new .ppt and inserting new .mpg saved to
the
desktop,
same error, so not a path length problem. HELP
