Running .mpg files smoothly

I have an .mpg file on a slide and it starts playing abruptly and stops
abruptly. It would be better
if it could "appear" to fade in and out. I thought of putting a mask over
it and fading the mask out after the movie begins to run, then fading it
back in before the movie stops....but I can't figure out how to get
something to exit before it enters.

Once a movie starts to run in PPT it always takes preference over any other
object animation on the screen and plays in front of all other objects.
There may be add-on programs that will do what you want.
