Run a DLL as an APP has encountered a problem

I am trying to install software to support my gamepad and when the
installation gets to the hardware detection phase i get the error "Run a DLL
as an APP has encountered a problem...." The solution posted for Gary's
problem will not even affect my problem because it is an entirely different
problem.
 
For those of you who are looking for an answer to a similar problem, I
corrected my problem by installing an updated version of the gamepad software
(4.60 versus 4.25). You may say to yourself, "well, duh!", but I have seen
quite a few posts about totally different situations that produce that error
message but not one of them offers a valid solution. I am giving you a
starting point for thought.
