Rule on Sent Items doesn't seem to fire

Hello,

Outlook 2003 on Exchange 2003 server:
I need to save all emails I send to a specific party in a specific folder. I
have been playing around with a rule on Sent Items where, if a message drops
in there sent to (e-mail address removed), it should be moved to inbox\joe's_sent_email
folder. The rule works perfectly when I "Run rules now", however it doesn't
work in real time. Is this an Outlook limitation? The rule is very simple,
the text of it says:
Apply this rule when the message arrives
sent to (e-mail address removed)
move it to the joe's_sent_email folder

I've also set up a 2nd rule that also doesn't work:
Apply this rule when the message arrives
with "(e-mail address removed)" or "Joe" or JOE" in the recipient's address
move it to the joe's_sent_email folder

Fairly straightforward. Both work fine when manually run.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

what account type? if you use an imap account, it sometimes fails, specially
when it can't connect to the server.

Hello,

You want to go to the very first setting, "Check messages as they arrive"
and change it to "Check messages after sending". You might need to make a
new rule for this. Sounds like you have all of the other settings correctly.
At our company we do alot of selling on eBay and keeping all of the mail
organized into over a dozen folders is manditory if you want to find anything
and make it useful. I've had alot of time to play with the rules and tweak
them over the past couple years to make sure it's as efficent as it can be.

That should work for you. I'll check back to make sure it did.

Thank you both for your responses. I see the error of my ways by not choosing
to check emails after sending. However...

However, after specifying characters to look for in the recipient's address,
when I configure what to do with it, I don't get an option to MOVE it to a
different folder - the only option available is to "move a copy to the
specified folder". Seems odd to me that you can't just move it. I don't want
to have to go back into my Sent Items and delete the originals, because I
don't want or need 2 copies of the same message.

Thoughts? Thanks!

That's normal - to move them you need to disable saving sent messages to the
sent folder. Also, if you are replying top message already in a folder,
enable the option to save copies in the folders with the originals instead
of using rules.
