RTF 2007

Fred

Hi,

is there a chance to tell Word 2007 not to use the new 1.9, but the old 1.8
or lower rtf-standard when saving documents?

You should be able to use the old Word 6 converter available to download
from my web site.

If you have installed the cnv file in the correct folder, when you save as
'other formats' you will find the filter listed as Word 6/95 - old
Filter(*.doc). Word 6 format is RTF. If you prefer to save with the RTF
extension modify the registry entry to use RTF ie

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text
Converters\Export\OldWordExp]
"Extensions"="rtf"
"Name"="Word 6/95 - Old Filter"
"Path"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1\\MICROS~1\\TEXTCONV\\WRD6EX32.CNV"

Either way you will get a security warning when you use the old filter. You
can click through the dialogs to save the file in the older format.

Well, its working partially. What I need is the same thing as a Word 2000 or
2003-rtf-file. Do you know if this is available? Your version kills tables
and backgrounds...

If you have access to the installation discs of one of those applications or
an installed version, you should be able to extract the cnv files - however
Microsoft's security updates will conspire to replace them again with the
later versions.

Hi Fred,

Each update version of Word has incremented the RTF specification to match.
2007 is 1.9.1
2003 is 1.8
2002 is 1.7
2000 is 1.6
97 is 1.5

Versions of the spec are available from http://micrsoft.com/downloads

Other than the 'after the fact' converters, such as the one that Graham mentioned as being on his site (2000.3.16.0),
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/171684/en-us?FR=1 the RTF conversion is usually, internal to Word, rather than the .CNV file, but
for Word 2007 the Word 2003 version of the Word 97-2000 RTF converter
(Wrd6er32.cnv - v2003.1100.8161.0) is available as part of the Office Converter Pack through the link in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925756/en-us?FR=1

Theoretically, a RTF parser (reader) should basically ignore codes (usually newer) that it doesn't understand. There was a change
in how Word handles tables starting with Word 2000, which the version on Graham's site covers. In what way are backgrounds (which
are primarily Word WebDoc features) and tables being 'killed' with that converter?
