Rplacing the TCP/IP layer for windows networking

I have a 3-computer LAN with broadband internet connection. Computers 1, and
2 are WIN 98-SE systems, and Computer 3 is a WIN XP Pro system.
For security reasons, I replaced the TCP/IP layer for windows networking
with NetBEUI, i.e., I removed the TCP/IP bindings to "Client for Microsoft
Networks" and "File & Printer Sharing" after the same bindings were added to
NetBEUI.
I did that on the two WIN98-SE machines, which now can communicate with
each other but no longer with the WIN XP Pro system, which can not see the
WIN98-SE computers.

How do I get the WIN98-SE computers to see the WIN XP Pro computer as
they did before I made the changes on the WIN98-SE computers.
I can't see how one can do the same thing on the WIN XP Pro computer.)

Thanks, CMA

Hi,

what kind of hardware gives you access to the internet? Do you have a
router or just a usb modem?? replacing tcp/ip with netbeui, is not a good
idea. Netbeui is a non-routable protocol. I understand your security
concerns, I'd rather use the Xp machine to connect to tne 'net and turn on
the built-in firewall or else purchase a software firewall, there are many
on the market. If you can afford it, maybe an ADSL router too, but stick to
TCP/IP. THe router can do network address translation and also, mask your
real IP addresses on the lan, you can filter unwanted incoming traffic and
protect you better. changing the protocols, only gives you headaches.

Hope this helps

Thanks, GB. I have a D-Link router.
All the computers are of course using TCP/IP to connect to the net through
the router. It is just for the LAN that I switched to NetBEUI on the
WIN98-SE machines. But of course the Win XP Pro machine is not using that
protocol.
When you click on the network adapter in the WIN XP Pro machine, there
seems no way to set the protocol it uses to communicate on the LAN.
I am not having any problem connecting to the internet. The problem is
with the LAN.

Since the WIN98-SE computers use NetBEUI for file and printer sharing,
you must install NetBEUI on WIN XP Pro, too, and un-bind sharing from
TCP/IP. I've written a web page with full details:

OK, I solved my own problem. WIN XP does not support NetBEUI, so it's back
to insecure TCP/IP for the LAN. That is why we need routers with NAT and
personal firewalls.

Yep, Rather do that. just use a 10.0.0.2 IP address range on the local lan
and whatever your ISP will give you, the router will do the rest NAT, and
security.
