Sorry kiddo, the free version is NOT out. I clicked on the link, and it is an
ad to download and buy 8. Oh well, now I don't have to worry about doing
anything.

Sorry for the confusion...:)

I know, but when I saw the link this morning, I thought the free version was
out. Oh well, less work for me. LOL I'll check back as usual, as everyone
here is so nice to keep us all updated.

Take care, and if I don't talk to you, have a Happy St. Pat's Day. :)

There is a big problem with Webshield, link scanner and the toolbar, which
are brand new additions to AVG 8.0

Being a reseller I am entitled to Technical Support for all their products
so I called them to find out when this is going to be fixed.
Seems that hundreds are having problems with webshield on both xp and
especially on Vista.
Grisoft has assured me that they know there is a problem and working hard to
figure out what is wrong. Webshield is a brand new component in AVG and in
testing they did not see these problems, and plan in the next month or two
to come up with an major update to fix the problem.

The tech advised me to tell my customers because 7.5 is still being
supported until the end of the year NOT to upgrade as of yet. Let them
figure out what is causing these problems (especially in vista) with
webshield, toolbar and link system, so I am passing this all on to everyone
here. I had to install it because I needed to know what it does or doesn't
so I can tell my clients what to do or not.

That is another reason why you are not seeing in your update manager to
upgrade yet.

Grisoft reassured me that they will figure out this problem and apologized
for any problems I or others have but asked to just sit tight till they
figure it all out.

I am betting they really did not realize these problems because inhouse they
did not see them and since we beta tested the product and told them there
was a big problem with webshield, they figured it must have been for just
the bunch of us who tested it and pushed the product out anyway.

I have reinstalled the avg pro 8.0 with antivirus without the webshield
until i see this upgrade because on my Vista Computer I cannot connect to
the internet with it enabled or even disabled. I willl reinstall it once it
is fixed for my vista computer

For Avg Pro 8.0 with firewall on my xp pro sp2 computer I am not seeing this
issue but I am told I am one of the lucky ones.

For AVG Pro 8.0 with antispyware, it also works fine on one of my xp home
computers.
But i do see a slight slow down with webshield enabled.

My advise to all of you- if you want to "play" with it and can put it on a
test computer then do so, but otherwise wait a few months before doing
anything at least till a new version comes out.

Really helpful information, Robin. Thanks very much, first, for checking
everything out, and second, for passing on your findings.
It's a great shame that they pushed it out in spite of your beta-test
warnings.

avg as a whole I believe is still a great product.
when they fix this and a few other problems, i still believe it it can hold
its own

I asked Grisoft about updating to AVG 8, because of initial reports on this
thread before I read about the warnings, and they allowed me to do it,
unfortunately. I emailed them about half a dozen items that are wrong with
it and have asked them if I can go back to 7.5 if they can't fix it. I wish
I had read this entire thread before updating.

R

Robinb

they just issued an updated version (87)
but if i were you, wait about 2 or 3 more months before upgrading
This new version fixes a few problems but not all

Since I mistakenly already upgraded to AVG 8, should I update to 87 or
downgrade to 7.5?

R

upgrade as long as you are not having any problems now
the upgrade did not make anything worse- it did fix the firewall for alot
and it did fix for some faster browsing

Actually, my browsing has slowed down. My cpu is at 100% a lot of the time,
even when I shut down SpySweeper.

disable webshield and see if that makes a difference

also for everyone here who installed avg 8.0

please check your system restore for both vista and XP
see if AVG is setting a restore point for each update
It is only suppose to set a restore point for a program update
If you do see an restore point for regular updates you need to send an avg
diagnostic report to AVG

To do this go to C:/Program Files/AVG8
Look for the AVGDiag exe file- AVG Diagnostic Tool

and double click it
in the box tell them what is going on

Also if you can take a screen shot of a restore point in system restore-send
them that too. On March 18 there was a program update. If you have more than
one system restore point for that date use that date or go back to a prior
or todays date.

I called them because I saw it on both my two computers and 6 of my clients
who now have avg8 are seeing this too.

They need to know it is not just the 8 of us so they can fix this
immediately.

This is a MAJOR bug and needs to be fixed now.

What will happen is you will run out of restore points and if you need to go
back you will not be able to because AVG update will use them all up.

I have a restore point on 3/18 for the program update, but also have one
later that same day for "software distribution service 3.0." I also have
one for a regular update for 3/19. I don't know about "software
distribution service 3.0."

I did not disable webshield. Doesn't that protect me against viruses from
websites? Wouldn't I be more vulnerable then?

R

Robinb

yes and no
it is an added defense for viruses but if you pick one up avg will scream
anyway
With the webshield AVG will completlely block it from coming into your
computer
With it disabled, avg will tell you picked something up and ask you want you
want to do with it ie heal, delete, put it in virus vault.
So bascially both ways you are protected

for xp
c:/Program Files/AVG/AVG8
Look at all the files in AVG8
this will say avgdag or avgdag.exe
You should see it with the avg icon in front of it
If you hover the mouse over it you will see AVG Diagnostic Tool
Its in there, I checked all 3 computers i have it on and it is there

Double click it
Give it a minute to load
then put your email address and tell them you are seeing these restore
points
Again open system restore and take a screen shot and send it to them where
you see "send files"
Click on Diagnostic and send
it takes a few minutes to go so don't be alarmed it it takes some time to
send

AVG technical support says that the program is set to create system restore
point during updates; that my AVG user interface is corrupted; and that a
file on my HDD is causing crash of AVG tests. I repaired my AVG and I sent
them a diagnostic test so that they can see what infection is on my HDD.

R

robinb

when i spoke to them on the phone they told me it should only set restore
points for program updates -not definition updates, sometimes the avg 8.0
diagnostic tool gets stuck and crashes but it seems by a reinstall it fixed
that. I doubt that unless you have a virus that is causing avg tool to
crash because i found it crashes on 2 of my machines too.

On wilder security forums, everyone who installed avg 8.0 is seeing these
restore points too so we are not the only ones. It is good you sent the
diagnostic info out and since everyone on wilders sent it out too hopefully
they will fix the problem.

After the last update of version 86-87 it seemed to have fixed the problem i
was having with webshield on vista. time will tell :)
