Roaming Profiles not updating

P

Paul

I posted this question on October 17th, and have yet to
hear a response. I don't know if it was forgotton, so I'll
try again...

I have a Windows 2000 SP4 Domain with two domain
controllers, and about 75 users running Windows 2000 with
SP4.

Having a problem with the users roaming profiles aren't
updating to the server. The problem is not machine
specific, because with one user it works, and another user
it doesn't. Newly created users always work, where old
users do not. I get this event 1000 in the event viewer...

Windows cannot unload your registry file. If you have a
roaming profile, your settings are not replicated. Contact
your administrator.

DETAIL - Access is denied. , Build number ((2195)).

I get this error in the Userenv.log file...

USERENV(c8.b0) 13:35:47:921 MyRegUnLoadKey: Hive unload

due to open registry key. Windows will try unloading the
registry hive once a second for the next 60 seconds (max).
USERENV(c8.b0) 13:36:48:068 MyRegUnLoadKey: Windows was
not able to unload the registry hive.
USERENV(c8.b0) 13:36:48:068 MyRegUnLoadKey: Failed to
unmount hive 5

USERENV(c8.b0) 13:36:48:088 ReportEvent failed. Error =
1502

I've looked in the MS KB, and did what the solutions said
for this event ID, which is always to re-installed SP4,
but no success.

Thanks!

My first thought would be to check the security on the profile share.
If new users work and old users don't then the security might have
been changed at some point. Make sure that the user has full Share
and NTFS rights to their profile location.

Although written for Windows NT the same rules still apply:

The profiles directory is a hidden share with Everyone
having full control share and NTFS permissions. I changed
it to full control to help troubleshoot the problem. The
profiles were working, until about 1 1/2 months ago after
a critical update was released. Although I can't prove it,
or point out the specific update. I have tried creating a
new profile directory and share for an account with admin
rights, and it still does not work. So I doubt it's a
permissions issue.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to be a Active Directory
problem with existing users. I know of another person who
has posted a similar posting here and has yet to get it
resolved.

This problem has resulted loss of profile data for
sporadic users. I have since changed all users' profiles
to be local instead of roaming to prevent further loss of
data.

Any suggestions?

Try this and see what you get:

1. Run "WHOAMI /USER /SID" to determine the user's correct SID.

2. Check the ProfileImagePath value under the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\
CurrentVersion\ProfileList\<SID>

3. Check the other ProfileList\<SID> keys for matching
ProfileImagePath values
and deleted those keys.

If this doesn't work I would suggest running a Network Monitor trace
to see exactly what is being asked and what are the replies. This
would help narrow down whether it's a Permissions problem on a remote
share.
