RIS - very very very very very slow

I have recently set up RIS on my 2003 server. Pulling down the default XP
image to a machine went quickly (start to finish about 10 minutes).

I customized that image, ran RIPREP and uploaded the image to my server.
That process also went quickly with the 4Gb image uploading in about 15 - 20
minutes.

Now, when I try to use RIS to pull down any image (even the default XP
image), the process works, but takes forever. The Windows setup page open
slowly ... each individual item that Setup loads takes 20 - 30 seconds,
instead of the whole process taking about that.

No changes to the server were made between pulling down the default XP image
and uploading the custom XP image. No errors were reported by RIS during the
image upload either.

Any thoughts?

Have you tried defragging the volume that contains your RIS images? I've
noticed that this volume gets rather "red" on my Windows 2000 Server, and I
make a habit of defragging the volume after performing modifications to the
RIS store.

Victory is mine!!! (posted here in case this information is of any use to
anyone else who might pass through).

The primary NIC on the server had two IPs bound to it. Removing the second
IP from the NIC made the problem INSTANTLY go away. *joy*

It appeared to be causing a 30 second timeout on the second IP for no
apparent reason. Nothing about it in the documentation that I can find but
such is the nature of technology.

Anyhow, with a single IP address bound to the primary network interface, all
is good and RIS images come down nice and quick.

Good work! Thank you for the info...

I guess the following commandment (found on the web) suites rather
well:

"Thou shall not multihome without consequences"
