RIS: Unexpected error 21?

K

Kenneth Belferman

Hello:

I'm trying to do a RIS install of XP. At the beginning of setup, I get the
following error:

"File EL2K_2K.sys caused an unexpected error (21) at line 3752 in
d:\xpsp1\base\boot\setup\setup.c"

At that point, the installation fails.

First, I have no directory on my RIS server named "xpsp1," so I'm wondering
where that's coming from.

Next, EL2K_2K.sys is a driver for the onboard 3Com ethernet adapter.
However, this is the W2K driver, not the XP driver. I went thru my entire
Remote Install directory and deleted all these 3 Com W2K drivers and made
sure the XP driver was present in each location. But the problem persists.

I also created a RIPREP image - and I get the same problem.

Any insights on this will be appreciated.

Thanks.

That sounds like an installation directory for the nic drivers, were those
drivers installed from a source with that path?

I would investigate the drivers problem, especially if the RIS is failing
while still in the blue-screen setup mode. Double-check your $oem$\....
driver setup based on this article:

Copy the EL2k_2k.sys file into the root of your base i386
folder along with inside of your $oem$\$1\Drivers\nic
directory if you use that.

restart the Remote Installation Service on the server.
