RIS is an Enterprise Environment

Subject - RIS in a large environment
Technology: Window 2003 Domain with WINS, and some NON-MS DHCP servers
(hardware Netscreen devices) - the main DHCP server is MS based - but one

Here is a challenge - there are over 175 subnets, and over 125 locations -
we want RIS (Windows 2003) - what do we need to set up at each location to
ensure this functions since we know that this does NOT work with NON-MS DHCP
servers?

I am thinking DHCP relay agents at ALL 125 locations - is this correct? How
should this architecture look - HIGH-LEVEL wise?

Thanks...plz do not answer if you are unsure or guessing. Much appreciated.

I'm thinking that will be a HUGE cause of problems in the organization, our
experiences with using MS DHCP relay agents has been that at best they're
flaky, I'll outline what we went through 12 months ago to help let you know
where I'm coming from.

We run a consolidated AD domain with 65 branches with 65 subnets connected
with everything from T1's to cable modems via a Cisco hardware based VPN,
we're currently only 5% 2K3, the other 95% is Win2kSP4

On Windows 2000 when you were running the relay agent and then went to SP4
the relay agent broke, it was verified and a hotfix was generated for this
on our PSS experience, I know for a fact we were the test case for the
hotfix.

On a bigger picture, if you're managing DHCP locally now, and plan to move
to relay agents.. huge change in thinking, especially if you're on a VPN
based WAN, since a connectivity problem to the home office will stop DHCP
offers in the branch.

If you're already doing DHCP via the Cisco helpers or similar the above is
most likely something you've already made your choices on the variable, and
I think it would be a much easier move.

wasnt involved in setup so cannot comment other than to say they work fine.
