RIS and define diferent computer names

J

Jorge Moura

I need to deploy Windows XP Pro in several computers at same time.
I was experimenting RIS and it seems to be just what I need. The only
problem with RIS is how can I define or predefine different computer names?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Hi Jorge,

You can setup a new computer in ADU&C using the GUID of the computer

Thank you Nathan for your help. My question is: is it possible to avoid
pausing the Windows installation (using RIS) for the field computer name?
The main gold is to install Windows without any user intervention required.
Is it possible to generate computer names randomly or to define pre-define a
computer name list?

Thank you.

Sure,

Use what I mentioned previously to give the PC a name that you want. This
will be picked up on the first few screens of the RIS install. Or configure
your RIS server to generate names with MAC address or what ever you choose.
This will then be displayed in the first few screens of the RIS install.

There will always be a small amount of user intervention to kick off the
install, but after that you won't have to press a single button.

You can setup the RIS server to automatically create the workstation names.
You configure this on the RIS tab of the server properties.

Or you can prestage the workstation GUIDs into AD.
