Do I need a VLK to use RIS in our network?

We have Dell Desktops that came with Windows XP Pro OEM.

I plan to redeploy the OS Image from Windows XP Pro VL to Dell Desktop in
case of a hardware malfunction.
Is this legal?

Or I have to buy VL key for each Dell Desktops just to enable RIS?

Thanks,
Ferdinand

Yes, that is legal. Just as long as you do not include a product key in your
Riprep.sif file that is used to push your image down to your client
computers. If you omit the "ProductKey=XXXXX_XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX" from
this answer file, you will be prompted by the RIS server and Windows setup to
enter the product key for the workstation you are imaging. Therfor you are
using a vailid key for each image, and no VLK is required.

HOWEVER! a VLK is ssssssssoooooooooooooo much easier from an admin stand
point. If your company can foot the $, then convice them it's the way to go!

Hi,

Does this mean I need Windows XP Pro FPP to build the initial image?

I've used Windows XP Pro VL before and when I followed your advice to omit
"Product Key", it prompts me for VL. I want to use OEM keys for my RIS. How
do I proceed? Thanks.
