Right mouse button crashes XP Home

I just upgraded my wife's computer from Win98 to XP
Home. Everything seemed to work OK, except that the
right mouse button now works only within applications.

When I right click on a folder on the desktop or within a
Windows directory, I get the hourglass and then the
computer is frozen.

I've reinstalled the upgrade and have also reinstalled
the mouse software (Microsoft IntelliMouse Wheel Mouse
1.1A PS/2 compatible).

The computer is a Dell Dimension XPS T600 (600MHz P3;
256MB RAM, plenty of room on the hard drive).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have this problem too on 1 of 3 XP Pro boxes. It only
started after that 1 machine installed a critical upgrade.

It seems that a lot of people have this problem, but there
doesn't appear to be a ready solution. My personal
feeling is that there is a problem in the message/event
pipeline.
