Right-Clicking Start hangs taskbar...

I am running Windows XP Pro. When I right-click on the Start button,
I get an hourglass and limited hang for a few minutes. I timed it at
3 minutes 30 seconds. (210 seconds once and 209 seconds a second
time). Hovering the mouse pointer anywhere over the Start...Time
taskbar gives an hourglass.

***Problem starts when I ...*******************

Right-click the start button when there is no instance of Windows
Explorer already hung.

Or, in Windows Explorer (WE), if I right-click on a folder (but not
for a file) it hangs that WE window but not another instance of WE,
which I can start with WindowsKey+E. I can even right-click a folder
in that other instance of WE. After the 3.5 minutes when the first
WE instance un-hangs, right-clicking a folder in the second instance
hangs that WE.

If I right-click Start while I have a WE instance open, I can
right-click the folders there without hanging.

Right-clicking a data file works if that WE is not already hung.

***What works while hanging after right-clicking Start:*************

Desktop items including launching new applications from shortcuts.

Alt+tab to switch between apps

Ctrl+Alt+Delete launches Windows Task Manager.

Running applications work fine.

***What does not work while hanging after right-clicking Start:*****

WindowsKey+E to launch Windows Explorer sessions, tho the WE
sessions will launch at the end of the few minutes.

Clicking WindowsKey to launch the Start menu.

Just moving the mouse pointer into the taskbar area will display an
hourglass. Moving it out of there removes hourglass.

Ctrl++Esc to launch the Start menu.

============Additional notes=============================

Windows Task Manager does not show an added task. System Idle
Process still shows the majority of CPU time.

Disabling the Internet Connection and the Local Area Connection in
advance in the control panel did not cause the hanging to not occur.

I did not find any registry keys that looked really suspect. I
greped for lines that had Time or Wait (case-insensitive) and either
210, 209, d2, or d1 following an equal sign "=" (ignoring extra
characters).

I have searched and found somewhat similar symptoms, but no
solution. Can somebody offer an idea to explain, and maybe even
cure, this?

Installing ShellExView and running it had the culprit extension
identified and disabled in a couple minutes!
