Very often, but not always, explorer simply freezes up (hourglass) whe
selecting a file or folder. Sometimes just right clicking on a fil
causes a never-ending hourglass. Sometimes I can end the applicatio
with Task Manager, which shows Explorer as Not Responding, bu
sometimes I have to manually re-start. Any ideas

It could be caused by a host of different things. First make sure that
your computer if free of virus, spyware and other such pests.

This could be caused by bad context menu handlers, see here for help on
troubleshooting and finding bad context menu handlers:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm

This could also be caused by certain applications running in the
background, for example Ctfmon has been known to sometimes cause
problems with Explorer.exe. Try running the computer in a Clean Boot
state and see if the problem persists:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

This could also be caused by damaged system files, run SFC SCANNOW to
repair missing or damaged system files:
