Explorer can't find HDs

Where can I post this and get an answer?
Original post 12/29
---------------
XP SR2
3 errors I think may be related
1) On opening Windows Explorer, when I click on My Computer, I get an
hourglass that runs for 2-3 minutes (literally) before it 'finds' my
drives - OEM with 3 partitions, and 2 USB drives with 2 partitions each.
I can read and write to all drives.
When all drives are visible, if I select a folder from the left pane, I
get a list of all subfolders/files. If I select a drive/folder from the
right pane, I get what appears to be the cmd prompt window. Sometimes it
closes in about a second, sometimes I must close it.
3) Computer Management>Storage>Disk Management - When I select this,
nothing happens for 1-2 minutes. I then get "Server execution failed.'
Ideas/troubleshooting suggestions please.

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.

(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Lets see if the errors have changed since early December?

Apparently your system has serious disk errors (hardware). You indicate
that there's external USB-connected drives. Power down the system and
disconnect these drives. Power back up and see if the system now behaves
properly. If it does, reconnect one and then the other to identify the
failing one. Replace failing hardware - drives are cheap and not worth the
time and aggravation to try to stretch out the use of failing units.

Very lately I've been doing an amount of recovery from failing drives, and
when they are connected via USB I could see the kind of delays you describe.
So, it's entirely possible that you do not have to reinstall or repair WMI
or DCOM.

I have been reviewing your exchange of messages with these newsgroups
since early December. I cannot determine whether you have one, two or
more problems.

You have posted a number of reports from Event Viewer but they relate
to different sessions. I cannot work out the sequence of errors to
determine how a problem(s) develops. If we can eliminate the early
errors it will either eliminate later errors or highlight where the
second problem starts.

Please will you please post all Warning and Error reports in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the latest boot. I am
not asking for copies of any Information Reports. Neither do I need
any Reports for the period after the boot process completes as these
will only confuse. However, the boot process often continues for a
minute or two after the icons appear on the Desktop.

BTW what Patrick Keenan is saying makes sense.

It would also be helpful if you could provide a list of your drives
and their drive letters. Does a drive letter for any particular drive
ever change? Are you still encountering difficulties with Disk
Management? Are all drives recognised by the BIOS?

Hope this helps.
