revised documents showing quotes and paratheses as small boxes

When my boss revises a document where I have quotes or parentheses, when the
document comes back to me for finalization, the quotes, etc. show up as
boxes. Why?
 
Your boss is using WordPerfect?

It certainly sounds like the sort of problem caused by using WP Typographic
Symbols font for these characters (though parentheses are not usually among
those involved).
