I recently upgraded my operating system from Windows XP
Home Edition to Professional. Since they we have had many
problems, including Internet running slow, certain
programs won't open, and overall runs slower. I want o
revert back to XP Home. I have both Pro and Home
installation CD's. I do not want to do a full install of
Home b/c I don't want to lose any newly installed
programs. What should I do?

You should try to make XP Pro work. It is no different than XP Home
with respect to the problems you have. It will be completely accidental
if by moving to XP Home these problems will be fixed. The root cause
surely is configuration or the "certain programs" and not anything
specific to non-performance by XP Pro.

Suggest you provide more details about the problems you are having and
perhaps assistance will be provided here.

Unfortunately, to downgrade from Pro to Home you would need to format
your drive and do a clean install of Home. From your scanty description
of your problem, I'd suspect a faulty install anyway and suggest that
formatting is the best way to go any way. Then install programs from cd
and restore data from backups.

Greetings --

The only way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home is to format
the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade path or
technique.

Simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Of course, you'll want to back up any important data before
starting.

Those will not be the result of the upgrade, but something else. Going
back to Home would need formatting the disk and reinstalling from
scratch. You could do a repair reinstall of the Pro, but either way the
something else will probably raise its head again and you need to
identify what it was.

One point - after doing any upgrade like that you need to defrag,
because the disk gets left untidy. And if you do one, or a new install
or repair, you MUST now get the firewall into action before ever going
out to the net for updates, or you will be hit by a virus or worm within
minutes. So I would make sure by doing an antivirus and anti-spyware
check with up to date programs before doing anything else.
