Retreiving video from a DVD

L

Lynda

I have a digital video camera and many tapes to convert
to DVD. Once I put them on DVD and erase the tapes, I'm
afraid I will later want to maybe condense the many DVDs
(edit and take clips from each to make one or two DVDs).
Can I retreive the video from DVD later. (I think the
answer is no.) Is there any way to input the data back
into the computer other than from the original video
camera tape? Such as from either A) DVD, B)VHS tape. ---
- I would like to be able to erase the digital tapes and
reuse them without losing the ability to edit them in the
future.

Yes, you can retrieve the video from the DVD at a later date. Be aware that
the video on the DVD will not be as sharp and clear as your original digital
tape. You could simply copy the footage to a dvd in it's native format
(broken into 4.3GB chunks); Then the video would be available for editing
without having been transcoded into MPEG-2 compliant DVD. The best
scenario, though, would be to simply store your original tapes in a cool
environment. The cost involved in storing the original tape vs. re-using
the tape is well worth it. I would recommend that you simply keep the
originals.
